What thickness zip lock bag do I need?

Not all zip bags run the same thickness. Match the mil to what you're bagging. Light retail, parts, and jewelry run 1.25 to 2 mil. Everyday storage and general shipping sit at 3 to 4 mil. Sharp, heavy, or abrasive contents need 6 to 8 mil. Gauge is measured in mils, and one mil equals .001 inch. Industry standard tolerance for thickness is +/- 10%. Still unsure? We'll send free samples so you can compare in hand, and a packaging expert can guide you at 1-800-820-4722.

Common questions about ClearZip® zip lock bags

Yes, zip-locking bags can be reused, provided they are adequately cleaned. However, bags used to store raw meat and oily or smelly foods should be disposed of due to the risk of contamination.

Yes, zip-locking bags can be recycled. However, they are usually not accepted in curbside recycling bins and should be taken to a grocery store with a designated plastic bag recycling bin. Before recycling, ensure that the bags are clean and dry.

While zip-locking bags are designed to be leak-resistant, they are not completely leak-proof. They can effectively contain most solids and liquids but are not guaranteed to hold all substances without leaking, especially when under pressure or overfilled.

Yes, zip-locking bags can be used for freezing food. They are designed to provide an airtight seal that helps prevent freezer burn. For the best results, use bags labeled as “freezer bags,” as they are typically thicker than regular storage bags.

Some zip-locking bags are made to withstand high temperatures and can be used for boiling food, but it is essential to use bags specifically labeled as safe for high temperatures. Standard zip-locking bags may melt or release harmful chemicals when exposed to high heat.

Some zip-locking bags are labeled microwave-safe, meaning they can be used to reheat food without melting or releasing harmful chemicals. However, it is essential to leave the bag slightly open to allow steam to escape.

Yes, zip-locking bags can be used in sous-vide cooking, but it’s best to use bags labeled explicitly as suitable for high temperatures or sous-vide cooking. These bags are designed to withstand prolonged exposure to heat without breaking down.

Yes, zip-locking bags come in a variety of sizes and thicknesses, ranging from small snack-size bags to large storage bags. Different designs are also available, like stand-up bags and bags with easy-open tabs.

We do produce BPA-free zip-locking bags, but it is always best to check the packaging information to be sure about any specific product. BPA-free products are generally recommended for food storage as BPA is a chemical that can leach into food and has been associated with health risks.

While zip-locking bags are not a substitute for vacuum-sealing bags, some air can be manually removed before sealing to create a somewhat vacuum-sealed environment. However, this method is not as effective as using a vacuum-sealing machine.

Zip-locking bags themselves do not have an expiration date, but the food stored inside them does. It is important to follow food safety guidelines and consume stored food within recommended time frames.

Zip-locking bags are designed to be airtight when properly sealed, which helps keep food fresh by preventing air and moisture from entering the bag.

Bags are measured and communicated in inches as width first, then by length. The Width is measured side to side when the bag is orientated with the opening at the top; the length is measured from the zipper track to the bottom. Please note that the Lip (area above the zipper) is NOT included in the length dimension. For bottom gusset bags, measure the open gusset across and communicate it as W x L + B.G: i.e., 6” x 8”+4”.

Please Note: Industry standard tolerance for size variances is +/- 1/8 inch for both dimensions.
