Trade-offs to plan for. Post-consumer recycled shows less clarity than virgin film and can print with minor inconsistency. Certified compostable film is cloudier, can't use an adhesive lip and tape (the tape isn't compostable), and print coverage is checked per color for compliance. Additives for photodegradation or compostability are available, but they add cost and the film can't then be recycled. Price differences are approximate and confirmed on your quote.
Sustainable packaging questions, answered straight
PCR is post-consumer recycled, made from the consumer waste stream like used bottles and film. PIR is post-industrial recycled, made from manufacturing scrap that never reached a consumer. PCR carries the stronger recycled-content story. PIR runs closer to virgin film for clarity and costs less.
No. Certified compostable film goes to an industrial composter, not your recycling stream. Mixed in with recyclables, it contaminates the batch. If you need a recyclable option, choose recycled-content or bio-based film instead.
It's the U.S. standard for industrial compostability. Film certified to ASTM D6400 breaks down in a commercial compost facility within a set time. It does not mean the film breaks down in a backyard bin or a landfill.
Yes. Post-industrial recycled runs about 15% more per pound than virgin film. Post-consumer recycled and bio-based run 40% or more. Certified compostable runs 450% or more. You're paying for the material, not a markup.
