draftA ten-pound bag of ice can produce approximately twenty-four nicely portioned “Sno-Cones”. It depends mainly on the type of ice cubes you have in the bags, and the size of the snow cone you are making. If you are using a solid block of ice, you will want to chip the ice down into manageable pieces that are about three inches to four inches in size. That way, the pieces of ice will be able to fit into the “horn” of the machine if you are using a commercial snow cone machine.
Depending on the density of the ice block, the type of water used to make the ice, and the thickness of the shaved ice, ten pounds of ice can make somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty-four to thirty-six sno cones. The number of sno cones also largely depends on the machine being used. An industrial or commercial grade shaving type machine, you should expect to net somewhere around thirty-six cones of refreshing tasty ice. If you must use a small household ice shaver, you’ll probably see somewhere around 24 cups, maybe lower. Not to mention it takes much longer, and the motor might just overheat. A twenty-pound bag of ice will make approximately 50 six-ounce snow cones.
If you're working or hosting an event during the summer months, when it is hottest, consider buying an extra bag or more of ice since the ice will melt faster in the heat. You may have more customers than initially expected, depending on just how hot it is. A good size cooler to keep the ice in may not be out of the question either.
