D.O.T. Explosives 1.3G Label for Hazardous Materials

Hazard Class 1 Transportation Label

This D.O.T. EXPLOSIVES 1.3G (With a predominate fire hazard) label clearly identifies potential hazards like fireworks in a familiar design. This 4 inch X 4 inch, Department of Transportaion shipping label conveys hazard information for containers or shipments of hazardous materials. The bright orange with black text on top cleary states "EXPLOSIVE 1.3G 1". Flexible llabel stock with permanent adhesive. The black text and the graphic of the explosion are both printed with UV-stable ink and is suitable for indoor or outdoor use at service temperatures from -40 F to +180 F.

Information on this graphic changes depending on which, "Division" of explosive is shipped. Explosive Dangerous Goods have compatibility group letters assigned to facilitate segregation during transport. The letters used range from A to S excluding the letters I, M, O, P, Q and R. The example above shows an explosive with a compatibility group "A" (shown as 1.1A). The actual letter shown would depend on the specific properties of the substance being transported.

For example, the Canadian Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations provides a description of compatibility groups.

• 1.1 Explosives with a mass explosion hazard
  • Ex: TNT, dynamite, nitroglycerine.
• 1.2 Explosives with a severe projection hazard.
• 1.3 Explosives with a fire, blast or projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard.
• 1.4 Minor fire or projection hazard (includes ammunition and most consumer fireworks).
• 1.5 An insensitive substance with a mass explosion hazard (explosion similar to 1.1)
• 1.6 Extremely insensitive articles.

The United States Department of Transportation (DOT) regulates hazmat transportation within the territory of the US.

1.1 — Explosives with a mass explosion hazard. (nitroglycerin/dynamite)

1.2 — Explosives with a blast/projection hazard.

1.3 — Explosives with a minor blast hazard. (rocket propellant, display fireworks)

1.4 — Explosives with a major fire hazard. (consumer fireworks, ammunition)

1.5 — Blasting agents.

1.6 — Extremely insensitive explosives.

§ 172.411   EXPLOSIVE 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and 1.6 labels, and EXPLOSIVE Subsidiary label.

In addition to complying with §172.407, the background color on the EXPLOSIVE 1.1, EXPLOSIVE 1.2 and EXPLOSIVE 1.3 labels must be orange. The asteric must be replaced with the appropriate division number and compatibility group letter. The compatibility group letter must be the same size as the division number and must be shown as a capitalized Roman letter.  In addition to complying with §172.407, the background color on the EXPLOSIVE 1.4, EXPLOSIVE 1.5 and EXPLOSIVE 1.6 label must be orange. The “*” must be replaced with the appropriate compatibility group. The compatibility group letter must be shown as a capitalized Roman letter. Division numbers must measure at least 30 mm (1.2 inches) in height and at least 5 mm (0.2 inches) in width. An EXPLOSIVE subsidiary label is required for materials identified in Column (6) of the HMT as having an explosive subsidiary hazard. The division number or compability group letter may be displayed on the subsidiary hazard label. Except for size and color. The EXPLOSIVE subsidiary label must comply with §172.407.
