The Freshness Color Code of bread

Why are there different colors on those tags and ties that keep the bags closed? They indicate when the loaf was baked. The standard is as follows:

Blue: Monday

Green: Tuesday

Red: Thursday

White: Friday

Yellow: Saturday

The colors run in alphabetical order, so the earlier they appear in the alphabet, the earlier in the week the bread was baked.

This set up was to help the supermarkets, bakeries and grocers identify which bread is new, which was getting old (so it can be discounted for quick sale), and which was out of date and needed to be removed. As a general rule of thumb, only two colors of tape on the bread bags at any one time, or three maximum for those days when bread hasn't been delivered. But that doesn’t stop the old bread from sneaking in though.

Make sure the color of the tag is the same as the day on which you are shopping when you go to the store for your next loaf. Please note that if it’s Wednesday, you also want green. Sunday, you want yellow. The system does not include Wednesday or Sundays. Bakers did not used to bake on those days.

In some instances, you may see bread bags taped with one color regardless of the day on which they were baked. What if the tape is always the same color? In that instance, a date appears somewhere on the bread bag, so, you will have to look for it.

Some Bread Makers Have Their Own Color-Coding Systems

Some businesses have created their own color code system for various reasons. Why they do this doesn't make a whole lot of sense, as this is not that helpful for them, because it makes the task of restocking, that much more difficult for them or the store they sell the bread out of.

Tape bagging produce has a general color coding system. The below list of the months that fruit is in season may not be univesal but it is a good "go-by".

Bananas, potatoes and celery seem to always be in season. For bananas, anyway, because they have to be shipped into almost every location in the states. There are a few empty areas in this list.There doesn't appear to be a clear cut season for carrots, parsnips and a few other vegetables and fruits.
