Bubble Wrap is a flexible clear plastic material commonly used for packing fragile items. Regularly spaced, outward extending air-filled bubbles provide cushioning for valuable or breakable items. Some people use the name generically for similar products, often termed bubble wrapping.
Bubbles provide the cushioning for fragile or very sensitive items are available in different sizes. The size bubble that you need really depends on the shape and size of the object being shipped or stored away, as well as the amount of cushioning protection that is needed. Single layers of one size bubble might be used strictly as a surface protective layer. Multiple layers of a different size bubble might be needed to provide shock and vibration cushioning.
The bubbles can be as small as 1/4 inch in diameter, to as large as an inch or more, to provide added levels of shock absorption during shipping. In addition to the degree of protection available from the size of the air bubbles, the plastic material itself can offer some forms of protection for the item packaged. For example, when shipping sensitive electronic parts and components, a type of anti-static Bubble Wrap is used that that dissipates a static charge, which in turn protects the sensitive electronic elements from static which can potential cause harm to the elements.
